"Out of all the men in world, I ended up marrying a bloody mouse"
So ends this short film.
Lasting all of five minutes or so, this film is a definite "kiss in the dark". It leaves you stunned, elated, and damnit!, wanting more. The name of the short gives it away, really. The plot focuses around a man (Richard) who we see in the midst of constructing something. We are given very few hints along the way as to what that 'something' is, and I've often found, when showing it to people, they tend to wonder aloud what it could possibly be. (I've heard the guess of a door quite often)
Sound-wise, it's incredibly minimalistic, relying only on the sounds of the tools that Richard's character - we never learn his name, he is only listed as 'The Man'- employs to bring his contraption into reality.
Also, there is no one else on screen for the course of the short excepting Richard. You could easily argue that this film is his headliner. :-)
But as the visuals and sounds take you along through the contraption's construction, we are still not allowed to see it. 'The Man' rests, takes a swig of London's Dry Gin and coughs- the closest thing to speaking he does throughout. He then smooths
his hair and adjusts his appearance in the mirror, and we next see him kneeling.
Looking as though he is praying, he leans forward and rests his head on a wooden block, tripping the mouse trap to come crashing down to his waiting neck.
A better mouse trap?
Maybe. But a hell of a film.![]()
