D&D co-creator Dave Arneson was recently on set in Prague for his cameo
and to check out the production in general. From his words at GENCON, Dave
seems quite excited about the movie and it’s quality. He also confirmed that
former Dr Who, Tom Baker, has a cameo in the film.
Sweet Pea is expecting to wrap principle photography in Prague this week,
ready for a solid stint in post-production. Word is that the movie will be
released in August 2000, or possibly Halloween if post-production is running
behind schedule. Reportedly we can expect to see a trailer for the movie at
SHOWEST early in 2000.
More info about the cast and characters... Jeremy Irons plays Profion, the bad guy wizard in the film. Bruce Payne plays Damodar, the bald headed fighting bad guy who works with Profion. Justin Whalen plays Ridley, the thief hero of the story. Marlon Wayans plays Snails, another thief and Ridley`s pal and comic relief. Zoe McClellon plays the mage of the group and is the love interest of Ridley. Lee Arenberg plays Elwood, a tough dwarf fighter. Thora Birch plays the 17 year old Empress.
In general the filmmakers are remaining true to the original source material, so expect to see loads of common D&D monsters and spells. As always, the filmmakers are looking towards turning the film into a franchise, and consequently there will be some subtle clues in this film that could be keys to sequels, but we’ll have to wait and see about that one.
The rating for this film will be PG-13 so you can forget your dreams of realistic gore in battle scenes. However, the filmmakers are reportedly planning to push the PG-13 envelope as far as they can with these scenes. In light of recent MPAA controversy, the PG-13 rating is probably as flexible as a concrete block.
Watch the release and success/failure of this movie with great interest because it will undoubtedly effect any future Dragonlance projects.
