Californian underworld; American comic strip types and antics; gaudy sexual
liberation; Man against the Devil; Tarzan and Jane; Beauty and the Beast;
the scene a circus ring with Satan as the Master; rock and country music:
this is some of the new musical, “T Zee”, by Richard O’Brien and Richard Hartley,
at the Royal Court.
There are Losers and Winners (with doors through which they go) and a hectic
atmosphere of people running away then rushing into someone’s arms. All is
banal and loud; and seems very confused. One has a sense of youngsters letting
themselves go though not to much avail, except to satisfy self-indulgence.
Perhaps all well and good, up to a point. But it should be taking place in
a fringe room somewhere, not on stage at the Court.
The production goes at a good pace and the general staging is effective. The
band is good. Amid some rather poor performances, outstanding are Warren Clarke
as T Zee and Paul Nicholas as a pop singer, Bone Idol. Nicholas Wright, co-artistic
director with Robert Kidd of the Royal Court, directed the show.
